The Christian Faith
By:Carl E. Braaten
Published on 2020-05-29 by

This single volume of dogmatics is an introduction to the Christian faith as such, written from an intentionally ecumenical perspective. Although this book is written by a Lutheran, its aim is to draw from the deep wells of the Christian tradition, its creeds and confessions, common to all denominations. Denominational dogmatics tends to define and defend the teachings of the Christian faith from the perspective of a particular church, in distinction from others. Ecumenical dogmatics is a relatively new attempt to focus on the beliefs and teachings fundamental to all communities that call themselves Christian. Such a project aims to be more irenic than polemical, intent on seeking and serving reconciliation and unity in Christ. The trinitarian and christological confessions of the first five centuries are foundational for all Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestant Reformation churches and, despite all their subsequent differences and divisions, are quintessential in their journey toward reconciliation and reunion. These ancient creeds also suggest the appropriate outline for the organization of the contents of dogmatics even today, following the works of the triune God--creation, redemption, and sanctification.

Christian-Muslim Relations
By:David Richard Thomas,Barbara Roggema,Juan Pedro Monferrer Sala
Published on 2009 by BRILL

Christian-Muslim Relations, a Bibliographical History 1 (CMR1) is the first part of a general history of relations between the faiths from the seventh century to the present. It covers the period from 600 to 1500, when encounters took place through the extended Mediterranean basin and are recorded in Syriac, Arabic, Greek, Latin and other languages. It comprises introductory essays on the treatment of Christians in the Qur'an, Qur'an commentaries, biographies of the Prophet, Hadith and Sunni law, and of Muslims in canon law, and the main body of more than two hundred detailed entries on all the works recorded, whether surviving or lost. These entries provide biographical details of the authors where known, descriptions and assessments of the works themselves, and complete accounts of manuscripts, editions, translations and studies. The result of collaboration between leading scholars, CMR1 is intended as a basic tool for research in Christian-Muslim relations.

Christianity
By:David Chidester
Published on 2001-11-27 by Harper Collins

David Chidester, one of the world's foremost scholars of religion, traces Christianity's growth and development from the time of Jesus to the dawn of the third millennium, revealing its rich diversity through the deeds and beliefs of heretics and saints, witches and healers, preachers and inquisitors. Chidester explores the emergence of the major streams of Christian thought and practice, distilling the cultural history of the Church and its impact on the world into this superbly readable book. Alongside this broad panorama is a richly human story that the author brilliantly encapsulates in incisive character sketches and historical vignettes. Christianity, in all its many facets, has been and continues to be one of the most influential forces in history. Chidester shows that this religion, with its roots deep in the ancient world, has always been in a constant state of evolution, affecting and affected by the religions and societies around it. At times Christianity has coexisted peacefully with other forms of belief, exchanging ideas and practices with them. At other times profound, even violent, conflict has arisen. In this book David Chidester intelligently and objectively portrays Christians in different times and places, as a minority and as the majority group, a religion both absorbing and resisting the world around it. Christianity reveals the religion as it was and is lived in the life of everyday people rather than focusing on the dry dogmas and beliefs that fill most histories. Chidester's accomplishment is to capture the complexity and grand sweep of this story in one remarkable volume that is destined to take its place as a classic of religious history.

Free Read and Download The Book of Revelation now

The Book of Revelation
By:Bishop Audrey Drummonds
Published on 2016-02-24 by AuthorHouse

Volume 2 is a continuation of our study on the Book of Revelation as pertained to who we are today in Christ Jesus. It was never meant to be a book full of tormenting fear that would cause us to want to leave this world, but through the mind of Christ, we have access to our heavenly inheritance to live in our Christ identity today. The Bible is a book written by God and the formation of His family. When we believe and understand the revelation of Christ already in us, we are shaped into His image so that when others see us, they see their Heavenly Father. When Jesus said It is finished, was he just making a way for personal salvation with God, or was there a bigger picture? Have death and the judgment seat been appeased, or is there something more that we are required to do? John 14:12 says, Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. For over two thousand years, the body of Christ has been like kings and lords hiding in a cave, waiting for a someday when they get to heaven to receive their inheritance as a son of God. When Jesus died, he gave us the ram's horn to declare that our jubilee is here now for us to receive. This book continues with the Holy Spirits instructions for our spiritual process that must take place individually and then corporately in each child of God to walk in the authority and power as His son. What He created in spirit must come forth in the flesh with His image and likeness. We must know in our heart that we are an offspring; a portion of the original.

Free Read and Download The Identity of Christian Morality now

The Identity of Christian Morality
By:Ann Marie Mealey
Published on 2009 by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.

This book argues that moral theology has yet to embrace the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council concerning the ways in which moral theology is to be renewed. There is little or no consensus between theologians regarding the nature, content and uniqueness of Christian morality. After highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the so-called autonomy and faith ethic schools of thought, Mealey argues that there is little dividing them and that, in some instances, both schools are simply defending one aspect of a hermeneutical dialectic. In an attempt to move away from the divisions between proponents of the faith-ethic and autonomy positions, Mealey enlists the help of the hermeneutical theory of Paul Ricoeur, arguing that the debate on the uniqueness of Christian morality can be mediated if scholars look to the possibilities opened up by Ricoeur's hermeneutics of interpretation. Mealey also argues that the uniqueness of Christian morality is more adequately explained in terms of a specific identity (self) that is constantly subject to change and revision in light of many, often conflicting, moral sources. She advocates a move away from attempts to explain the uniqueness of Christian morality in terms of one specific, unchanging context, motivation, norm or divine command or value. By embracing the possibilities opened up by Ricoeurian hermeneutics, Mealey explains how concepts such as revelation, tradition, orthodoxy and moral conscience may be understood in a hermeneutical way without being deemed sectarian or unorthodox.

Religion
By:Christian Smith
Published on 2019-03-26 by Princeton University Press

A groundbreaking new theory of religion Religion remains an important influence in the world today, yet the social sciences are still not adequately equipped to understand and explain it. This book advances an innovative theory of religion that goes beyond the problematic theoretical paradigms of the past. Drawing on the philosophy of critical realism and personalist social theory, Christian Smith explores why humans are religious in the first place—uniquely so as a species—and offers an account of secularization and religious innovation and persistence that breaks the logjam in which religious scholarship has been stuck for so long. Certain to stimulate debate and inspire promising new avenues of scholarship, Religion features a wealth of illustrations and examples that help to make its concepts accessible to readers. This superbly written book brings sound theoretical thinking to a perennially thorny subject, and a new vitality and focus to its study.

The Reason for God
By:Timothy Keller
Published on 2008-02-14 by Penguin

A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by |a pioneer of the new urban Christians| (Christianity Today) and the |C.S. Lewis for the 21st century| (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.
